Mon-Puo Lee

Being a Spanish cellist born 1993 into a Taiwanese artistic family, Mon-Puo Lee began his musical education at an early age. With four, he began studying cello. In addition to his main instrument, he also studied piano and voice. From 2009 until 2014, he was a student at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía of Madrid in the chair of cello with Professor Natalia Shakhovskaya. From 2014 until 2015, he was also a student of Ivan Monighetti. Since 2015, he is studying in the UDK of Berlin under Jens Peter Maintz. 

Mon-Puo took part on the Kronberg Academy Cello Masterclasses. He received a scholarship from the International Music Academy Liechtenstein and took part in the intensive music weeks and activities of the academy there. 

Mon-Puo has won numerous awards. In 2010 he was honored with the title of “Extraordinary Musician” of his hometown, becoming an ambassador of the culture abroad. From 2012 to 2014, he won several prizes in International Competitions and achievements, including the 1st prize at the “Davydov Competition in Latvia”, the 3rd prize at the “Brahms Competition” in Austria and the 1st prize at the “Pedro Bote Competition” in Spain. During this time, he was as well awarded with the diploma for the most outstanding string chamber group of his school, receiving this prize from the hands of her Majesty the Queen Sofia of Spain. Since 2015, he won the “Llanes Cello Competition” and the 2nd prize of the “Isang Yun International Cello Competition” in South Korea. In 2016, he was also awarded the 1st prize in the “International Chamber Music Bacewicz Competition” as a cello/piano duo. 

At the age of 22, Mon-Puo made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonie, where he has performed on several occasions since. He also appears regularly in further world-renowned concert halls including the Konzerthaus of Berlin, the National Concert hall of Spain, the Wigmore Hall London, the Gasteig of Munich, the National Concert Hall of Taiwan, the Zenéakademia of Budapest, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Tongyeong Concert Hall in South Korea. 

He has collaborated with several orchestras, including the Berliner Symphoniker, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, the Enescu Festival Orchestra, the Jenaer Symphoniker, the Nürnberg Symphoniker, the Chamber orchestra of Andrés Segovia, the Tonyeong Festival Orchestra and the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra. His chamber music partners have included Guy Braunstein, Vilde Frang, Clara Jumi Kang, Andreas Ottensamer and Wen-Sinn Yang.

He plays a Cello Made by Garimberti (1923) and a bow made by Maire, both loaned generously from the Chimei foundation in Taiwan.
