Dmitri Bashkirov was born in 1931 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the master class of Prof. Alexander Goldenweiser. Dmitri Bashkirov's name became famous when he won the "Grand Prix" at the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris in 1956. The pianist had played in the greatest houses with numerous famous orchestras, under conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Sir John Barbirolli, Wolfgang Sawallisch and many more. Dmitri Bashkirov has made numerous concert tours with the Borodin Quartet. He was professor at the Moscow Conservatory, titular professor at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and professor at the International Piano Academy Lake Como in Italy. Among his former students are many prize winners of important international piano competitions such as Jonathan Gilad, Boris Bloch, Arcadi Volodos, Dang Thai Son.
Dmitri Bashkirov has been a juror at many piano competitions worldwide and has given master classes at many cultural centres around the world.
His recordings have been released on labels such as Erato, Harmonia Mundi, EMI and Melodia.
Prof. Dmitri Bashkirov passed away on 7 March 2021 at the age of 89.
