Marilies Guschlbauer first came to international prominence in 2016 with her solo debut at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, performing Schumann’s Cello Concerto with the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock under Wojciech Rajski. Further successful tours as soloist have led the young Austrian cellist to various cities in Japan, Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall, and the Shanghai EXPO. Over the years, Marilies has participated in the Verbier Festival Academy, Cello Biënnale Amsterdam and Kronberg Academy, and made guest appearances at the Quincena Musical San Sebastian, City of London Festival and Fränkische Musiktage. In 2020, she became the first cellist to be selected as an “mdw artist” and in 2021, she has been chosen to join the „Villa Musica“ Foundation in Germany as a scholarship holder. Highlights of 2021 include concerts in the Wiener Konzerthaus, at the Podium Festival Mödling, concerts in various chamber music formations with eminent artists such as Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, as well as tours through Poland and Greece.

Marilies is winner of Second Prize at the Manhattan International Music Competition and the Liezen International Cello Competition. Together with her pianist brother Nikolaus Guschlbauer, she won the chamber music competition ON STAGE in 2018; in 2019 they took the top prize in the highest category at the international competition “Giovani Musicisti – Città di Treviso”. From 2004 onwards, she won six first prizes at the Austrian youth competition “Prima la Musica” at the national level, in addition to several special prizes.

Marilies has given numerous recitals with her brother at the Niederösterreichischer Musiksommer, in Schloss Wolkersdorf, at the Mahogany Cycle Vienna, in the Brahmsmuseum Mürzzuschlag, and further afield in Switzerland, Prague, Washington DC, New York, Nassau, as well as on Austrian television at the “Licht ins Dunkel” gala. Other notable appearances have brought her to the Golden Hall and Brahms Hall of the Wiener Musikverein, the Mozart Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus, the chamber music hall of the Berliner Konzerthaus, and the Festspielhaus St. Pölten. 

As an enthusiastic chamber musician, Marilies has taken part in a wide array of projects and ensembles, culminating in concerts at the Salzburg Chamber Music Festival and the KlangReisen Zyklus, Hopfgarten Chamber Music Festival, Stift Ossiach, at the “Next Generation” festival in Switzerland, and in Paris, London, Poland, and Mexico (Palacio de Bellas Artes and Sala Nezahualcóyotl in Mexico City). She has shared the stage with such eminent artists as Enrico Bronzi, Clemens Hagen, Xenia Jankovic, Thomas Riebl, Nora Romanoff-Schwarzberg, Tanja Tetzlaff, Candida Thompson, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Annika Treutler, Thomas Zehetmair, and Christoph Zimper.

Marilies completed her Bachelor’s degree with distinction studying with Clemens Hagen at the Mozarteum Salzburg and is currently in the studios of Nicolas Altstaedt at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin and Reinhard Latzko at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Among those who have given her additional musical impulses are Hatto Beyerle, Gautier Capuçon, Eberhard Feltz, Gary Hoffman, Robert Levin, Jens Peter Maintz, Lawrence Power, Heinrich Schiff, Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Julian Steckel, Gábor Takács-Nagy, and Torleif Thedéen.
