Sonoko Miriam Shimano Welde

Violinist Sonoko Miriam Shimano was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1996. She first started to play the violin at the age of five with Crista Bohlmann in Minnesota later continuing under Britta Skärby-Vindenes in Bergen. Currently she is a student at Norway's leading talent school, the Barratt Due Institute of Music, with Prof. Barratt-Due, Prof. Alf R. Kraggerud and Prof. Henning Kraggerud. A former student of the Razumovsky Academy in London, she has also benefited from master classes with musicians such as Mauricio Fuks, Almita Vamos, Dora Schwarzberg, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Olivier Charlier, Ida Haendel, Sarah Chang, Pamela Frank, Winfried Rademacher and Koichiro Harada.

Sonoko Miriam has performed as a soloist at venues like London's Wigmore Hall, Bergen’s Grieg Hall, Tokyo Opera City Hall and Osaka Izumi Hall and the festivals such as the Bergen International Festival, Valdres Sommersymfoni, Røros Winter Festival and the Ljubljana Festival.

Regarding competitions, she has won first prizes at the Norwegian Music Championship for Youth, as well as prizes at the International Kocian Violin Competition (Czech Republic) and Young Musician (Estonia), and has twice been a semi-finalist in the Menuhin Competition (2008, 2010). Sonoko Miriam is a recipient of the Bergen Municipality Talent Award (2009).

She is a keen concert performer both as a soloist, chamber and orchestra musician. From 2004 to 2006 she belonged to the Jimia Quartet made up of music students from Bergen. In 2009, Sonoko Miriam guested at the Bergen International Festival and Valdres Sommersymfoni with Schubert´s String Quartet in C Major. In 2011, she performed with Arve Tellefsen, Stephan Barratt-Due and the Ensemble Noor, concerts in 2012 saw her alongside Elise Båtnes, Ernst Simon Glaser, Gonzalo Moreno, Henninge Landaas or Dora Schwarzberg. In September 2012, she tours Norway performing the Schumann Piano Quartet with fellow students from the Barratt Due Institute in 8 different cities.

As an orchestra musician, Sonoko Miriam was concert master in the Norwegian Children’s Orchestra in 2008 and 2009. In May 2011, she spent an internship week in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra having the pleasure of accompanying Janine Jansen for Shostakovich´Violin Concerto No. 2. In January 2012, she repeated this experience with Daniel Hope playing Benjamin Britten´s Violin Concerto. In chamber orchestra formations, she was part of Oslo Camerata for Haydn´s Cello Concerto with Truls Mørk, Mozart´s Violin Concerto No. 4 with Henning Kraggerud, Schumann´s Cello Concerto (arr. for chamber orch.) with Truls Mørk in 2011 and on many other occasions.

Solo performances have seen Sonoko Miriam with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ung Symfoni (Bergen Youth Orchestra) in 2006; the Estonian Chamber Orchestra and Asker Symphony Orchestra in 2009; the Collegium Musicum’s Orchestra and Ung Symfoni in 2010; the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Asker Symphony Orchestra in 2011. In August 2012, Sonoko Miriam will perform Bruch´s Violin Concerto in G minor with the Halsnøy Student Orchestra.

The young artist plays a violin by P. Robin (2007), on loan from Dextra Musica. She is featured on a new CD “Nine Solos for Nine Violinists” from the Grappa/Aurora label, along with other young violinists presenting contemporary Norwegian music for solo violin released in June 2012.
