The American cellist Rainer Crosett was born in 1992. As a Harvard College graduate, he received a John Harvard Fellowship, an Artist Development Fellowship, and the Lucy Allen Paton Prize for excellence in the arts and humanities. He completed his studies with Magna cum Laude and received his M.M. in cello performance by the New England Conservatory. Rainer recently received his Artist Diploma from the University of Southern California and is now continuing his studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin as a scholarship holder of the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians.
He took lessons and master classes with well-known cellists such as David Geringas, Frans Helmerson, Steven Isserlis, Yo-Yo Ma, Laurence Lesser, Bernard Greenhouse and Gary Hoffman. His key teachers and mentors included Jens Peter Maintz, Ralph Kirshbaum, Paul Katz, Mark Churchill, Robert Levin, Benjamin Zander and Emmanuel Feldman. He also received a scholarship from the Liechtenstein International Music Academy and took part in the academy's intensive music weeks and activities.
Rainer received the silver medal and the Artistic Encouragement Award at the "Ima Hogg Competition" 2017 in Houston and in 2015 won the 1st prize at the "New England Conservatory Concerto Competition". In 2017 he was a finalist in the competition of the “Victor Elmaleh Concert Artists Guild” and a participant in the “Queen Elisabeth Competition”. In 2018 he also won the "Pierre Fournier Award", the "Performing Arts Competition" of the Fine Arts Club of Pasadena and a "Presser Graduate Award" from the University of Southern California.
As a chamber musician, Rainer has performed at numerous festivals, including Music@Menlo, Yellow Barn, Piatigorsky International Cello Festival, Prussia Cove, Trondheim Chamber Music Festival, Stavanger K&M Fest, La Jolla SummerFest, Chamber Music Workshop of the Perlman Music Program and Kneiselhalle. He has also worked in performances with artists such as Robert Levin, the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Seth Knopp, Laurence Lesser, Cho-Liang Lin, Anthony Marwood, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian and the Parker Quartet.
Rainer has been the principal cellist of several orchestras, including the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the USC Thornton Symphony, the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra. As the principal cellist of this orchestra, he toured the Netherlands, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Cuba.
