Canadian cellist Grace Sohn with a South Korean background was born in 1999. She is now based in Berlin to study at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik with Prof. Troels Svane.
She has participated in master classes with renowned artists, including Colin Carr, Jens Peter Maintz, Jian Wang, Rafael Wallfish and Myung-Wha Chung. She also receives a scholarship from the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein and participates in the intensive music weeks held there.
As a rising next-generation artist, Grace was named the 1st prize winner of the “International Anton Rubinstein Competition” in Berlin, winner of the “Canadian Council of Arts Instrument Bank Competition”, the “International Busan Maru Competition” in South Korea, the 2nd prize as well as the “Best Interpretation of the Test Piece” prize at the “Shean Strings Competition” in Canada. She has been nominated as one of “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30” in 2018. As an avid chamber musician, she has won numerous prizes at “Friends of Chamber Music Competition”.
Grace has performed as soloist with Philharmonia Northwest at Kane Hall, Busan Philharmonic in South Korea and with the VAM Symphony Orchestra. She has already performed across Europe, Asia and North America.
Her studies are supported with scholarship by the BC Council of Arts. She currently plays a 1824 McConnell Nicolaus Gagliano II cello generously on load from the Canadian Council of Arts and a french bow made by Victor Thomassin as a loan from the Rubinstein Akademie.
