Alejandro Viana

Alejandro Viana was born in Spain in 1996. He began studying the cello at the age of seven. He studied with María de Macedo and with Lluis Claret in Barcelona. He is currently studying at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Ivan Monighetti and previously with Natalia Shakhoskaya. 

Alejandro received master classes from teachers such as Raphaël Pidoux, Christophe Coin, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Wolfgang Boetcher, Amit Peled, Wolfgang E. Schmidt, Claudio Bohórquez, Ralph Kirshbaum, Stephan Forck, Alexander Rudin, Philippe Müller, Gary Hoffman, Jens-Peter Maintz, Gautier Capuçon, Menahem Pressler, Gidon Kremer, Frans Helmerson, and Truls Mork. In 2018/2019, he was a member of the Classe d`Excellence de Violoncelle of the Fondation Louis Vuitton under Gautier Capuçon. He also receives a scholarship from the International Music Academy Liechtenstein and takes part in the intensive music weeks held there. 

In 2013, Alejandro won the “Extraordinary Graduate Prize” of the P. Soler de San Lorenzo de El Escorial Conservatory (Madrid). In his school he was awarded the prize "Best Student" five times. He received 1stprizes in several competitions such as the "Liezen International Cello Competition" (Austria), the "II Concurso Jóvenes Promesas de Violoncello Jaime Dobato Benavente" de Alcañiz (Spain), the "Manhattan International Music Competition", the "Soncello Competition" (Spain), the “IX. International Cello Competition Antonio Janigro" (Croatia), the "Llanes International Cello Competition" (Spain), the "Karl Davidov International Competition for Cellists" in Kuldiga (Latvia) and the special prize at "The Zagreb Soloists", celebrated in Porec (Croatia). At the Verbier Festival 2021 he won the opening competition of the Elbphilharmonie. 

Alejandro has taken part in various festivals such as the IMS Preussen Cove, the Rutesheim Festival, the Santander Festival, the Kronberg Academy Masterclasses and the Menuhin Festival. He has played under conductors such as Zakhar Bron, Ivan Monighetti, Mihaela Martin, Nobuko Imai, Frans Helmerson, Zubin Mehta, András Schiff and Krysztof Penderecki. He performed André Previn's Nonet with Anne-Sophie Mutter. He recently made his Carnegie Hall debut. 

As a soloist, Alejandro has performed with the Chamber Orchestra Andrés Segovia, The Zagreb Soloists, the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, the IUVENTAS Orchestra, the Málaga Philarmonic Orchestra, the Camerata Viesgo, the Chamber Orchestra of Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, the Galician Symphonic Orchestra, the Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the Freixenet Symphonic Orchestra under Plácido Domingo. 

Alejandro is a fellow of Juventudes Musicales.
